Succession Planning

The business ownership cycle has a natural conclusion. At some time, the majority of owners will wish or need to retire or simply exit the business.

What happens to the business in these circumstances? There may be a family member primed and ready to take over. But in many cases, the owner may not have addressed the issue and so urgent action is needed unless the business is to wither and die. Succession planning allows the owner to identify a future for the business that he or she may have spent years nurturing.

Perhaps the preferred option is to seek a sale to a third party. It could be a management buy-out. Or it could be a buy-out by the employees – there are many examples of successful employee-owned companies.
